I just wanted to let you know how sorry I am to hear of Mary’s passing. I will always remember that precious smile as well as her dedication to all of the students she helped throughout her long career in education.

Mary Jane Mosson, 87 of West Lafayette, passed away at 2:40 pm Monday November 6, 2023, at
Franciscan Health East Hospital in Lafayette. She was born October 18, 1936, in Rossville, IN to the late
William Franklin and Lula E. Israel Unger. She was an elementary school teacher and received her
bachelor’s degree from Franklin College and her master’s degree from Purdue University. She married
Nelson R. Mosson, who survives, on June 1 ,1959 in Rossville, IN. She taught elementary school and
later specialized in remedial reading in the Lafayette School Corporation for over 30 years, retiring in
1999. After retiring, she assisted her husband in establishing the Sylvan Learning Center in Lafayette.
Mary was a member of the First Christian Church of Lafayette where she served as elder, participated in
handbell choir, Women’s Christian Fellowship, and Sunday school teacher. She enjoyed traveling; she
and Nelson were world travelers. They enjoyed many winters in Florida, walking the beaches and
collecting seashells. Mary loved spending time with her family. She loved gardening, reading, painting
and ceramics. Mary was also an avid tennis player.
Surviving with her husband of 64 years are her daughters Carmaleta (Brett) Hamilton of Heltonville, IN
and Pamela (John) Crowder of Indianapolis, grandchildren Justin (Leah) Olson, Kayla (Jordan) Pugh,
John Mark (Kyndall) Olson of Indianapolis. Her great-grandchildren include Evangeline Olson,
Camille Olson, Calvin Olson, Juliette Olson, Owen Olson, Kaelyn Olson and Calloway Olson. Also surviving
is her brother Charles (Carol) Unger of Moro Bay, CA.
Friends and family may call from 10 am to time of services at noon on Friday November 17,2023 at the
First Christian Church 329 N 6 th Street Lafayette where Pastor Andrew Guthrie will officiate services at
noon. Committal service will follow at Rest Haven Memorial Park, Lafayette.
The funeral service will be live streamed at fcclaf.org at noon.
