We all remembered John as an avid hiker & his volunteer work on the Appalachian trails. Every summer for almost 20 years he would come out to work the trails and stay with us and then go on a road trip before going back to Lafayette.

Adrienne cherish those times when John visited when she was young before grade school and through high school. In essence he was a grandfather to her. They enjoyed teasing each other and John chasing her around the house.

John help build out an additional room to our house and brought my mom and Midge out to visit us several times.

Thank you John for all the good times you spent with us.

It was great to be on the Potomac Appalachian Trail Crew’s [PATC] Massarock Trail Crew with John for eighteen years working on trails in the U. S. National Forest Service, Lee Ranger District, Edinburg, VA.

John was a self-made man who lived life on his terms. He grew up on a family farm in Lafayette, Indiana. After graduating from Jefferson High School, John joined the U.S. Marine Corps and served during the Korean War. John was an entrepreneur and operated his own business, JA Howard Construction, for 35 years. John was an avid hiker and had a passion for the great outdoors and traveling across the United States.

For almost 20 years, every summer, he worked as a volunteer for the Appalachian trails. These summer trips would include a stay with his nephew Steve Pauley’s family. His time spent with them is filled with cherished memories. After his long stretch on the Appalachian trails, John stayed closer to home. He enjoyed hiking at Armstrong and Munger parks in Lafayette. John took pride in his work, whether it was as a contractor, on the trails, or mowing his lawn. He extended his lawn care to his long-time neighbor and friend, Betty, as they watched out for each other.

The twinkle in his eye and the smile on his face will be greatly missed by all who knew him. John is survived by his sister Edith (Rusty) Cassini and was preceded in death by his parents, Lillian and Andrew Howard, and 9 siblings: Rosco, Mary, Roger, Clara, Eugene, Grace, Kenneth, Aletha, and Frank.
